Chinese web services company, Baidu Inc, is developing an alternative to Google Glass known as Baidu Eye. It is a digital eyeware that takes advantage of Baidu’s strength in image search and facial recognition.
Baidu’s spokesman, Kaiser Kuo, informed that the prototype of Baidu Eye was tested internally. He was not sure whether the glasses will be commercialized and it would be premature to compare it with Google Glass at this stage. The device is fixed on a headset with a small LCD screen so that the user can search for images and voice. The user can also recognize faces by matching the captured facial image with the existing patterns in the database.
So far only Google and Baidu have officially announced that they are working on eyeware though Apple is said to be working on similar product called iWatch. Nevertheless, it is expected that Google Glass will have to face competition in China.
