Oracle claims that its new generation of microprocessors, SPARC T5 is the fastest microprocessor in the world. The new processor has 16 cores which actually is double of what its previous version T4 has. The number of threads, cache size and memory bandwidth have also doubled. The new one will operate at the clock speed of 3.60GHz. Oracle proudly claims 17 world records for SPARC T5 microprocessor, including a TPC benchmark showing that the SPARC T5 is the fastest processor in the world for database.
The new servers SPARC T5 and M5 that use the latest SPARC chips outperform the powerful IBM servers. Moreover these servers take less time and less space.
According to Larry Ellison, CEO of Oracle, the design of processors will continue while taking into account the software running on them. Oracle will attempt to double the performance every year and start moving its software features, such as database and Java accelerators, onto the silicon. In fact, the performance of SPARC chips has been doubled every year in the past three years.
